New School Nation IV: Coax Fishing Co
We’re back with New School Nation VI. This time we are featuring Coax Fishing Co. an apparel company founded in 2017 by a couple of anglers from the great state of Texas. To learn more about Coax Fishing Co. and what they’re all about, read on.
Background, where are you from, where do you live?
We were raised, founded, and currently based in Houston, Texas.
Conventional, spinning,fly rod?
We are made up a crew of guys that are known to throw anything from a woolly bugger or clouser to a jig or crank bait.
Tell us a little bit about Coax Fishing Co? Is there a backstory to the brand or how you got started?
Coax was founded in 2017 by Myself (Greg Gabrisch) and co-founder Greg Cozad. We met in 5th or 6th grade and have together shared many interests and hobbies over the years. Up to this day fishing has been the one that has really stuck for both of us. Late in the Spring of 2017, amongst many “boat talks” we began discussing interests of pushing our own image of fishing to a platform that we could share with like minded anglers. After a few months of pondering and planning Coax Co. was born that August of 2017.
What inspired you to start Coax Fishing Co?
We really just wanted to create something that resonated more with our backgrounds and style, which come from things such as skateboarding, rock & roll, and art. There aren’t many brands out there in the fishing industry that really tie in with these kind of ideals. The way we saw it as guys who fish constantly was there wasn’t really much out there for us, outside of the kind of cliche fishing apparel. So, we decided to make our own. Being a guy that has Bachelors degree in art with concentration in photography, and years of interest and experience in art and design, it kind of just made sense.
Do you have a favorite product/design?
I think that our favorite design would have to be our very first design that was kind of inspired by tattoo style artwork. We call this design “The Battle” as it depicts a snake fangs out coiled around a bass with mouth open wide facing off. A bit of a eat or be eaten moment.
We are actually currently in the process of reworking the design and plan to release it on some new stuff in the next couple of weeks.
Just looking through your website and Instagram it’s easy to see that all your images are beautifully shot and curated. How important to your brand is good quality imagery and photography as a whole?
It is very important to us, we see photography not just as just a way of documentation of fish caught or showcasing pieces of apparel. More so we see it as a way to tell the stories of time spent on the water in a more aesthetic way that portrays our style and vision in hopes to reach a connection with our following that brings more light to fishing than the industry norm.
Where should people go to learn more about Coax?
We are most active on instagram (@coaxfishingco), but we are also on facebook (Coax Co.), and all our gear can found on or website www.coaxapparel.com.
Are there any shops that carry Coax Fishing Co gear?
For the time being we are available solely on our webstore.
Is coax all about Bass fishing specifically or does it extend to all species?
While we do concentrate a large portion of our time and focus on bass, we do make effort to spend time not only fishing for other species but incorporating other species into our brand. As close as we are to the coast here in Houston, we do like to get salty as much as possible and I think we will push to increase focus into other areas of the fishing world in the future.
Is there anything new coming from coax in 2019 that we should keep an eye out for?
With the months getting warmer we are in the process of preparing the release of some new “performance” shirts as well as some new tee’s and what not. You can expect these very soon, so keep your eyes peeled.
